Director who made Southern film Industry or rather Indian film industry turn, look up to him on a different style towards film making has come up with Avan - Ivan. I had to search for his caliber and style in Avan Ivan. I question why did Bala wanted to take up such a script..? And the answer he gave to media is his mentor Balu Mahendra advised him to try a different genre. Bala has chosen an ordinary predictable story line with just one new character styling (Vishal).
Movie revolves around Arya, Vishal, and GM Kumar. Where Arya and Vishal are stepbrothers and Arya as a witty naughty guy, Vishal on the other hand a calm composed person showcasing mannerisms of transgender. Basically both of them are thieves and Bala’s humorous screenplay occupies first half along with Vishal and Arya’s Love life. First half is well supported by Ambika, Arya’s Mom and Dad (Ananth Vaidyanathan). Need to mention about the boy who comes with Arya, a well appreciated effort. The little boy and Arya at times are a scream in the first half and the second half belongs to Vishal acting skills. Dialogues are completely on a different genre, multiplex audience would not like it, and however it clicks at most times. Must be said that comedy is not slapstick like the crazy Mohan’s but it’s more of a situational humor through emoting.
How did they performed
Suriya in a cameo: Answered few questions to critics about his Agaram foundation through the movie
Stepbrothers Walter Vanangamudi (Vishal) and Kumbideran Saamy (Aarya) are thieves
Vishal: Learnt what acting is and taken tremendous efforts for his role. His squint eye act may be first of its kind in WORLD CINEMA.
Arya: Has not got a good scope, but he is as usual his casual best.
Madhu Shalini and Janani Iyer (Constable Baby) Heroines: Just some appealing looks, fair skin and wanted to tag them selves they have made a movie with Bala. No great scope
GM Kumar (Nick names Hines): Good Contribution to the Character as a zamindar. He carries the pride that he hails from a royal family
Music: dint gel very well, Music is the back bone of any movie, esp Bala’s, when you have the maestro playing up for every Bala movie, which transform his screenplay to the next level. But this time around, Yuvan has scored and it is disappointing and clearly looks like he was out of his comfort zone of hard hitting loud music.
Cinematography: Arthur A. Wilson: No new camera frames or anglesfew shots will rewind you about Pithamagan for sure.
Bala trying with a commercial entertainer has failed to engage the audience. He has inserted needless scenes, has some very loose plots, and disjointed screenplay – very unlike Bala. I guess as a reviewer we must not question his credentials, he has by the way transformed Tamil cinema making and viewing. So I would end saying, commercial entertainer are not easy to make, it needs as much of soul as it takes for a dark oxidized film.
