Women directors are fast becoming a power in Tamil cinema, and most of the women prefer a candy lover story or a strong issue which is close to the heart, but director Sudha has decided to take the action revenge genre, with Drohi. Alphonse Roy’s camera work is shining. Alphone Roy with cinematography and Sreekar Prasad editing goes well together. Selvaganesh’s music is ok. Srikath as Samy a Brahmin boy is pretty decent and has given a strong comeback. Vishnu as Karuna and Thyagarajan as Narayanan is just OK. Pooja has done a cameo role! But I wonder what she brings to the draft for a definition of a cameo? Poorna and Poonam are passable, but at times Poorna as Malar is raucous and irksome.
Samy and Karuna are good friends, they kill a guy when they are at school using a blade, this is Karuna’s idea and executing is done by Samy. Cops catch them, and the kids are beaten up viciously. Now Karuna breaks down and names Samy who is the one has committed the murder. They are however left scot free thanks to a local politician. This incident make Samy hates Karuna as he thought his friend shriek on his friendship! The title Drohi is apt.
They grow up as the uneducated Samy becomes the henchman of the local dada and drug smuggler Narayanan (Thyagarajan), while Karuna a brilliant student is appearing for his IPS interview! Samy cultivating and winning over Malar (Poorna), Karuna's sister. And Sruti (Poonam Bajwa) is madly in love with Karuna. A series of incidents drive them further apart, shown as flash back on a railway track.
Sudha’s endeavor and the lady producers should be patted for a two hour action drama, which would have become an immensely popular movie if at all it had a crisper screenplay. Hugely disappointed that for a serious movie, movie does not have a comedy string which would have, reached the audience healthier
