Mandhira Punnagai is a film straight out of a protagonist book . Well its hard to define a genre for this film. Karu Palaniappan as Kadhir has depicted his role to perfection, I must say and Meenakshi as Nandhini is good looking, and far a good bet on acting than most others in her league. This film is about an man who is smart and intelligent and is suffering from a mental illness. I suppose the biggest draw back of this film is that the director keeps the audience confused till the end without telling what the illness is. I reckon after googling I got this word " Schizophrenia". I am not sure is this the correct one, but it is pretty closed to the correct condition of the hero played by the director himself. Film is very hard to digest to the viewers who like sitting with the family for a quite evening movie watch. Santhanam's comedy as usual is slapstick and very good even though at times it is very crude and adulterated. Cinematography does not have to stand out, since the character and the situations are very bleak. Overall technicalities overrule the pretty think script. Vidyasagar music is a big let down, however the background scores could be rated very high. First half is quite fast, but the second half is slow, tedious and could have trimmed good 20-25 mins of screenplay.
The plot of the film revolves around the mental illness of Kadhir. The audience is kept confused all the while, and finally we feel this is a physic movie. Kadhir is an brilliant architect, who tastes success easily. He is a drunkard, smoker, and a night a woman sleeper (man hoe). He has got company with his flat owner and sometime his assistant Senthil (Santhanam) for drinks. This guy talks open and talks his mind regardless of the situation, where all his good goes for nothing because of his venomous words. Kadhir has got no morale. He falls to Nadhini who work as Honda (handa as she pronounces) sales executive. Kadhir has a troublesome childhood with his mother having extramarital affair which leads to his dad suicide. Kadhir's Schizophrenia starts because of that, and he lives in an imaginary world, isolating himself from Love and affection. He talks to himself thinking he is talking to his dad, and he hates whoever showers love and affection to him. He hates with his venomous words, which sometimes in the story is very hard to hear and of-course the director has given a justification saying everyone has an evil side, wherein people don't let out their evil side and thoughts to the society. The society hates Kadhir not because he has got no morale, but because he is an open book. The story ends with Nadhini proving her love and making Kadhir realizing affection and thereby curing his illness.
