After watching Vanam, you would definitely have the answer why Simbu chose Vanam ditching KO. Yes this is the finest script Simbu has worked in his carrier, without a doubt. Krish has almost adapted to his Telugu version of Vanam and has introduced very Hollywood akin storytelling to Tamil audience. VTV Ganesh should be proud of his production and overall Vanam works at Large even with its minuses and drags.
I cannot stop admiring the script. We have seen script, without a strong powerful cohesive screenplay failed miserably even from top directors. But Krish has given a cracker of a screenplay and has completely thrown a new age direction. Music could have been better, with adequate BG but some mass songs. No Honey No Money song has been badly inserted and does not facilitate the movie to move in a better pace. Editing for this genre should be excellent, and Krish and his team have delivered just that. Cinematography has done an implausible job considering there are 5 stories inside this film and each one has been shown in a different set of lighting. Hard work is entirely visible.
The Five stories and the Cast
1. Bharath and his rock band which includes Vega travels to Chennai to perform on the New Year eves program. The group is pumped up on their first opportunity and decides to hit the road after missing the flight. Bharath tends to ham it up and Vega did not get a meaty role to emote.
2. Prakashraj and his wife Sonia Agarwal set off to Chennai in search of his brother get wedged with a bad policeman. As usual a subtle knock out performance from the master Prakashraj and Ravi Prakash (Policeman) has done a role which required lot of attitude and his body language is just about perfect
3. A famer family (Saranya) from Nellai travels to Chennai to sell of their kidney to help Saranya’s son continue his education
4. Saroja (Anushka) is a call girl who is under the control of a pimp who runs a brothel in Sulurupettai. Saroja is in enormous claim by rich and powerful in town and the smart girl decides to run away to Chennai and set up her own trade. She is on the run after eloping. Credit to Krish who has not shown the call girls scene too impure and has handled the subject quite well. Anuskha pulled off a tough role with lot of ease.
5. Finally, Simbu a Cable operator is in love with a rich girl and wants to marry her. He is accompanied by Santhanam and VTV Ganesh. Simbu gets into larceny in order to satisfy the demands of the rich girl. Simbu has done his best role so far in his carrier. He has shown everyone that if he gets a good script, he can definitely be a lot better actor. Santham comic timing is very funny. Simbu and Santhanam combo works pretty well. Lady love of Simbu, Pooja (Jasmine) is a huge let off and a complete mismatch to a performing cast.
The film is shown how five parallel running stories run against each other and finally meets at a point, with an overstated climax. I was little bit let down with the realism of the climax. But the end message has been conveyed well and job is done.
Drawback of the movie is for the first time Tamil viewers have been treated to this complex storytelling and this could create some confusion at the viewer’s intellect. Climax should have been better, and Bharath’s role should have been more realistic. There are couple of inferences to other actors which is so frequent with Simbu should have been avoided.
Overall the movie works ok and hats off to KRISH
Theatre Experience: It was fun, and loud when Santhanam was around and it was intense and gripping when Prakashraj was shown. Audience lapped Simbu’s performance and overall an energetic crowd.
